Frequently asked questions

Why does my iPhone save photos as HEIC?

HEIC keeps the same picture quality as JPG in about half the space, so iPhones use it by default. Many websites, Windows PCs and older apps can't open it, which is why converting to JPG helps.

Can I open a HEIC photo without converting it?

Safari on an iPhone, iPad or Mac opens HEIC directly. Most other browsers and many apps can't, so JPG is the safer choice for sharing. To make the iPhone save JPG from now on, choose Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.

Is my location copied into the JPG?

No. The location, camera details and other hidden information in the HEIC file aren't copied into the new JPG or PNG, so it's safer to share. The picture itself stays the same.

Why do some websites only take JPG?

Many government portals, exam forms and job sites accept only JPG (or JPEG) and reject HEIC uploads. Convert the photo here first; if the form also has a size limit in KB, compress the JPG afterwards.
